They are looking for donations of boys and girls shoes, with the greatest need being sizes 1 through 5 new or like-new athletic shoes. A collection area will be set up in the Atrium on July 3 & July 10 during both services as we continue to “Serve in His Cause” by caring for orphans and widows. Chix One Day and Guatemala

Chix One Day and Guatemala

On our recent Guatemala mission trip, we had the pleasure to distribute bracelets made during the Chix One Day retreat. During the retreat we spent some time making bracelets for the women who work at the orphanage we visit in Guatemala City. We prayed over the bracelets and asked a blessing on the hard-working women who would receive them. There are approximately 80 women who work on the orphanage campus, teaching, cleaning, cooking, diapering, laudering, feeding and loving over 500 children, infants through young adults with special needs. Some of the women travel 2 hours by foot and bus to get to work 6 days a week. I need to remind myself of their labor when I start feeling put-upon at my posh job.

Half the Church (plus a giveaway!)

The Chix Team is reading the book, Half the Church, by Carolyn Custis James. It is an outstanding book that will challenge you to see the potential God has for you as a woman and your impact in the church and in the world for Him.

“There is more to us than we know.
If we can be made to see it,
perhaps for the rest of our lives
we will be unwilling to settle for less.”

Kyria, a digizine for Christian women

Kyria, a digizine for Christian women

If you’re like me, you love to read magazines. It seems there’s a magazine for everything from gossip rags, to crafts, to food and decorating. But for a while I couldn’t seem to find a good one for Christian women. That is until I heard about Kyria.

It’s a digizine. Digizine was a new concept for me. It’s a magazine that you subscribe to on-line and download onto your computer. Kyria is a monthly publication from Christianity Today International, so you know it’s got great articles.

This month Nancy Guthrie, Jane Rubietta, Jill Briscoe and others wrote articles. And because it’s downloaded on your computer, it has extra bonuses. There are inspirational and interview videos, links to extra articles, related websites or scripture references mentioned in stories and even PDF files you can download.

If interested, go to http://www.kyria.com/. Check out the website. Its an amazing resource, with free newsletters, articles, blogs, and the ability to subscribe to Kyria, the digizine.

Coffee and Scones

Coffee and Scones

Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. ~Acts 2:46

I love this verse because it gives us a picture of what early believers did and what happened as a result: they made time for each other’s company, they invited each other into their homes and lives, ate together, praised God, and enjoyed each other’s company. What an awesome picture. And the result? People came to know Christ!

Want to get to know more ladies? Invite them for coffee and scones! Spend a few hours getting to know each other, talk, pray for each other and journal. Set aside time on a regular basis– it could be weekly, twice a month or monthly- whatever works for you. Sometimes we think community is complicated, big and scary– but it’s not. Start small, and God will place people in your life to love, support, and sharpen you in your Christian walk. And, you will do the same for others- not out of obligation, but love for one another. If you have a strong group of faithful friends, give thanks to God, and teach others how to get started. Pray to God for true community this week and watch Him open doors!

Here is a great recipe to get you started. I pray over the scones as they’re baking- that they would nourish those who eat them, and that they turn out! Happy Baking!

Scones with Powdered Sugar Glaze

Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, frozen
1/2 cup fruit or raisins
1/2 cup sour cream
1 large egg

Directions:

  1. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, 1/3 cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. Grate butter into flour mixture on the large holes of a box grater; use your fingers to work in butter (mixture should resemble coarse meal), then stir in fruit.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk sour cream and egg until smooth.
  5. Using a fork, stir sour cream mixture into flour mixture until large dough clumps form.
  6. Use your hands to press the dough against the bowl into a ball. (The dough will be sticky in places, and there may not seem to be enough liquid at first, but as you press, the dough will come together.)
  7. Place on a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7- to 8-inch circle about 3/4-inch thick.
  8. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tsp. of sugar.
  9. Use a sharp knife to cut into 8 triangles; place on a cookie sheet (preferably lined with parchment paper), about 1 inch apart. Bake until golden, about 15 to 17 minutes.
  10. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or at room temperature.

***Powdered Sugar Glaze***

1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine
1 teaspoon milk, or more
1 teaspoon vanilla

For Powdered Sugar Glaze: Stir together sifted powdered sugar, melted butter or margarine, milk, and vanilla in a small mixing bowl. Add more milk, 1/4 teaspoon at a time, till glaze is of drizzling consistency.
